CommercIal Certificate Requirements

To earn your Commercial Pilot Certificate, you'll need to meet specific flight experience, training, and testing criteria set by the FAA.

Commercial Pilot Certification Essentials

To achieve your Commercial Pilot certificate, you must meet extensive flight hour requirements and pass both written and practical tests to demonstrate your skills.

To earn a Commercial Pilot certificate, you must log a minimum of 250 hours of flight time. This includes passing a written knowledge exam and a practical test to prove your skills to FAA standards, administered by a designated pilot examiner.

Before pursuing a Commercial Pilot certificate, you must first obtain a Private Pilot certificate (or meet the requirements of 61.73). You must also:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Be able to read, speak, write, and understand English
  • Pass both the written knowledge test and the practical exam (including an oral component and checkride)

*Although not mandatory, we strongly recommend obtaining an instrument rating prior to pursuing your commercial rating.

  • Obtain a knowledge test endorsement per 61.103.d.
  • Secure logbook endorsements for the practical test.
  • Meet aeronautical experience requirements per 61.109, including:
    • A minimum of 250 total flight hours, which must include:
      • 100 hours in powered aircraft, with at least 50 hours in airplanes
      • 100 hours of pilot-in-command (PIC) time, including:
        • 50 hours in airplanes
        • 50 hours of cross-country (XC) flight time, with at least 10 hours in airplanes
      • 20 hours of flight training on areas of operation listed in 61.127(b)(1), including:
        • 10 hours of simulated or actual instrument training
        • 10 hours of training in a technically advanced aircraft
        • One 2-hour day cross-country flight of at least 100 nautical miles
        • One 2-hour night cross-country flight of at least 100 nautical miles
      • 3 hours of instruction in a single-engine aircraft within 2 months prior to the practical test
      • 10 hours of solo flight time or 10 hours with an authorized instructor, including:
        • One cross-country flight of at least 300 nautical miles, with landings at a minimum of 3 points, one of which is at least 250 nautical miles from the departure point
        • 5 hours of night VFR conditions, including 10 takeoffs and landings at an airport with an operating control tower

*Completing these requirements will prepare you for a successful career as a commercial pilot, opening doors to a variety of aviation opportunities.
