Our Solo Flight T-Shirt Tradition

A Time-Honored Tradition in Solo Flights

In the early days of aviation, students and instructors sat front-to-back, without radio communication. To relay instructions or encouragement, the instructor would tug on the student’s shirt.

Cutting the shirt tail was a significant and cherished milestone. At the end of a student’s first solo flight, the instructor would cut the tail as a symbol of trust and a rite of passage, marking the transition from physical signals to independence.
